France requires companies with electronic cash register systems to comply with strict legal requirements - particularly with regard to tamper protection and data archiving.
Important: The legal requirements changed fundamentally on February 16, 2025!
Since this date, the French tax authorities (DGFiP) no longer accept the previously possible self-certification as valid proof of compliance.
Transitional regulation until 31 August 2025:
During this transitional phase, self-certification will remain temporarily recognized. Until then, companies can continue to operate their POS systems in compliance via a corresponding self-certification - provided they have not yet undergone certification.
New requirements will apply from1 September 2025:
POS systems must then either
- be certified by an accredited body(Infocert or LNE) or
- provide evidence that the certification process has been formally initiated, e.g. through an acceptance of an offer, a binding order or a signed contract with one of these bodies.
From1 March 2026, valid certification will be mandatory for all POS systems that fall under the French fiscalization requirements.
Companies already operating in France or planning to expand into the market must ensure that their POS software fully complies with the updated requirements - and take action in good time.

From September 1, 2025, systems must either- provide evidence of certification by Infocert or LNE or- provide evidence that the certification process has been formally started (e.g. through acceptance of an offer, order or contract with the certification body).
From March 1, 2026, valid certification will be mandatory for all affected POS systems. Companies should take action at an early stage in order to meet the requirements in good time.
Certification (certification des systèmes de caisse) ensures that cash register systems are tamper-proof and comply with legal requirements to prevent VAT fraud.
The duration of the certification process varies depending on the complexity of the system and the efficiency of the cooperation with the certification body. It is advisable to start planning and implementation at an early stage.
Without certification, companies risk sanctions such as fines or operating bans because the legal requirements are not met.
